Joachim Loew was a middling, mid-level professional coach until the day in 2004 when German national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann named him an unlikely assistant. Until then, Loew had coached mostly in the backwoods of European soccer. He’d been fired in Germany when his club team got relegated to a lower division. He lost his [...]

FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig should go on vacation together to discuss their progressive visions of the future. Perhaps a week in Pompeii would be fitting. Two of sports’ final holdouts against instant replay could sit around and discuss the beauty of clinging to the tradition of blocking video [...]

The time has come. It has been nearly four years since we last threw on our jerseys, painted our faces and hoisted up our national flags. Nike is ready to do the same. Being an avid fan and former employee of the brand, I am continuously fascinated by the campaigns the brand launches. The new [...]

I have to admit that I never have been a fan of Madonna, but one must pay her respects to what she has accomplished in and within the entertainment industry over the past two, now nearly three decades. She has always found a way to reinvent herself and her management knew just how to market [...]

Taking time off in between workouts does not mean you are demotivated or lazy – it simply makes you smart. I was reading an article a while back released by scientists at Ball State University who found that the muscle damage caused by pumping iron can sap your full strength for up to two whole [...]

04/07/2010 11:15 pmAt this point its tough, Spain and Germany are both in my top 3 teams. Spain has been an okay goer – and Germany has been crushing everyone, literally. Germany is going hard and i think it might end up being Holland and Germany. Go Germany (or Spain).

04/07/2010 10:45 pmThe 4th ref was added after that game. The idea of being able to challenge a certain action once or twice per game is very interesting. Soccer still has a long way to go, let’s see what will happen. btw, who you think will win?

FIFA, Add video?

04/07/2010 10:21 pmAre you kidding me? SInce when is there a ref behind the goal? the 4th Ref is on the sideline and assists in timing and switching in players. I agree that soccer should stay the way it is, as traditional as possible yet maybe there should be a similiar step as in American Football where a coach could challenge a call once per game!? Spain vs. Germany is up next.

FIFA, Add video?

04/07/2010 1:01 amWell, I am not quite sure how it will work with technology playing a role in soccer. Even though technology might help prevent certain situations like that, it won’t really have a chance to come into use because soccer doesn’t have a lot of breaks, and if they were too constantly take breaks and take a quick look for a certain action, then the game would lose its flow. Because of this incident, they already added another referee behind the goal, which might have a little impact, but mistakes are mistakes, and yes they can change the entire flow of an entire world cup, but this is soccer and this is how it works. The only way it could work with this technology is if they had another ref at the top in the tower to watch the replays to communicate through a microphone with the main ref about certain situations, but let’s see how it rolls. Good post
